Josie and the LOLcats is an amalgam of Josie and the Pussycats (which is a Scooby-Doo style cartoon about a girl band who have adventures, so dated now it’s retro and about time for a comeback) and LOLcat (which is a funny cat picture with an ungrammatical caption, according to wikipedia invented in 2007 by icanhascheezburger and driving internet freaks crazy with their new werld l33t speek).

As a writer and linguist, I am fascinated by the phenomena of the grammar and spelling rules of these captions, and I see them as a valid form of poetic expression such as haiku. For more on the rules, see the Wikipedia article on LOLcats, but if you want to visit the icanhascheezburger.com site and make your own, the rules are pretty easy to pick up as you go along.

*I should point out that I have googled this phrase and found that there is a band called Josie and the LOLcats set up in Feb 2008 but so far I can’t find any music of theirs. However, I claim the right to use the name for this page because a) my name is Josie, b) I grew up in the seventies and c) I love cats.
