Cats feature strongly in my self-image, and black cats even more so. Through much of my life I have lived with a black cat, although the cats themselves have come and gone. A witch’s ‘familiar’ could be any animal, not only cats, but black cat’s became the stereotype when the true horrific nature of accusations of witchcraft became a harmless children’s story. Even so, cats have always been my preferred companions as they are intelligent, independent and clean. With a cat, the relationship feels like equals rather than that one is superior (the cat always tries to be superior but I still put her out at night). Hermione came to live with us in 2004. She needed a quieter home than the one she was living in, as she found sharing difficult. We already had a dog (see Mika's Page) but no other cats and only one child. Hermione was nervous at first but soon became queen puss. We now have another cat, Kit-bag, but Hermione remains Queen Boss Topcat. I have used cats for inspiration in my art (see 'cats' on my Recent Art Page) and also in my writing.
Hermione doesn't like to behave like normal cats. She drinks out of the dog's bowl, refusing to drink any water I put down for her. But even then she doesn't drink it by lapping, like a cat usually drinks. Instead, she dips her paw into the bowl and licks the water off her paw, which is something I've seen chimpanzees doing. I think she really believes that she's a higher mammal. If she was anything in her past life then she would have been a queen or a high preistess.
Hermione likes to eat the poshest type of catfood, the type that's more expensive than the food I eat. She has this spot on the landing where Mika isn't allowed to go. She also has the best seat in the house.
Hermione makes a good LOLcat model, but not as good as Kit-bag because she tends to take herself too seriously.
A terrible affliction in a cat.
